To have a successful community it needs a strong foundation in shared values. These values need to be clear and easy to understand, so everyone can properly agree to them. We believe our current society makes all the wrong choices for all the wrong reasons, so we want something different.
We’re creating an ecological farm by using the Permaculture design framework. This is a journey (not simply a decision like flipping a switch) in which we move away from practises damaging to our planet, to a regenerative (agri)culture where we do more good than harm to the natural world. This is the first core value.
We try to get our directives from how nature works best. That applies to both our activities as well as how we relate to other team members at EcoGay. Each person is a unique human and needs to be seen as a ‘whole being’, not just as a combination of seemingly random abilities and characteristics. This is the second core value.
We do not work to gather financial capital for personal enrichment. Instead we work to grow our natural capital by investing surplus finances back into the community. By doing this we create a resilient ecosystem and human community. We feel we’re on this planet to help improve this world, not to extract and exploit. We work in symbiosis with both the natural world as well as with any human belonging to it. This is the third core value.
Who knows more about Permaculture will have recognized that the three Permaculture ethics are the same as our core values.
Based on these three guiding values we have formulated some very simple practical rules.
