Some Backgrounds

What we do at EcoGay is more like hands-on research than anything else. The main subject of our research is how to live on this planet without doing harm to nature. Being gay is an extra dimension or complicating factor depending on how you look at it.

The whole gay angle comes from the realization that permaculture only properly works in a broader community. A community needs more than good intentions to work out. People are complicated creatures and need to gain something essential from a close cooperation with other people. That’s why we organized our ideas around options for gay men to work on these issues together in nature. We all need a place where we can be ourselves and be appreciated for being us, to truly call it home. Most gay men might like the cities, a lot of us don’t and rather live on the land and we have claimed our space for doing that.

We feel it’s essential that this research gets done, so that’s why we do it. Since we’re not part of a government funded university, we need to secure our funding in different ways. The best way is to offer what we can to people who see the value of it. That way we can cooperate with mutual benefit.

We’re not really farming, because we do not maximize the crop output from the land. To setup an ecological operation means dealing with dependency on natural processes, which take quite some time to properly understand and then some more time to establish.

The EcoGay farm is more like a park that also produces food. Like this we aim at taking care of ourselves and our guests. If there is any surplus we often compost it. If we do sell anything, we invest the proceeds back into our research.
